Tebow’s legend grows with walk-off homer

-

The St. Lucie Mets were in Seventh Heaven, thanks to their savior Tim Tebow.

The former Heisman Trophy winner hit a walkoff, solo home run in the seventh and final inning of St. Lucie’s game against the Daytona Tortugas Thursday night.

Entering the bottom of the seventh, which was the final frame because the teams were playing a double-header, the Mets were tied 4-4.

With one out, Tebow came up and crushed the ball over the left field fence to give the Mets the 5-4 win. St. Lucie won the first game, 1-0.

TO BLEACH THEIR OWN

Things aren’t looking too peachy for former Cubs slugger Sammy Sosa.

Sosa joined ESPN Deportes reporter Enrique Rojas for a discussion that aired earlier this week, but Twitter users couldn’t focus on the interview itself.

Wearing a pink fedora and outfit that matched the color of his bleached skin, Sosa was ripped on social media not only for his choice of clothing, but for looking more pale than ever before.

The former National League MVP and home run champion has been criticized for bleaching his skin, but claimed in a 2009 interview with Univision that he uses the cream to “soften” his skin.

“It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften (my skin), but has bleached me some,” Sosa told the network. “I’m not a racist, I live my life happily.”

Having first appeared with lighter skin in 2009, Sosa’s skin is even more whitewashed now than it was eight years ago, and Twitter users haven’t held back, captioning screenshots of the interview with tons of wise-cracks.

Rojas is the same ESPN Deportes columnist who reported on the first bleaching story for ESPN in 2009.

FOOD FOR BART

Bartolo Colon just went from being one of Major League Baseball’s worst players in 2017 to Minor League Baseball’s best marketing tool.

The 44-year-old, who posted an 8.14 ERA before being designated for assignment by the Braves this season, will make his first start with the Twins’ Triple-A Rochester Red Wings Thursday night. He’ll face the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, who did not wait long to cash in on this Big Sexy opportunity.

It was so enticing that the IronPigs named a sandwich after their opponent, Colon.

“Celebrate Bartolo Colon’s start on Thursday with the #BigSexy Sandwich,” the IronPigs tweeted. The sandwich includes pork, bacon, salami, cheddar cheese, cabbage, tomato and a steak roll.

The Red Wings didn’t pass up the opportunity either. They recently announced that they would be changing their name to the Rochester Plates on Aug. 10 in honor of their ballpark’s famous food item, and by chance, Colon was signed just days later. “Plates” shirts with tons of food featured on the front, and Colon’s name on the back, are now being sold on the team’s website. If the IronPigs feed Big Sexy a Big Sexy Sandwich Thursday night, it just might be too much. — Staff report

RAYS’ RASMUS STEPS AWAY

The Tampa Bay Rays have placed injured outfielder Colby Rasmus on the restricted list after the player’s decision to ‘step away from baseball.’

The team did not provide specifics Thursday, instead saying in a brief statement that the club fully supports the player deciding to leave.

The statement concluded: “We are thankful for his contributions to our team, and we wish him and his family the best as they move forward. Respecting the privacy of Colby and his family, the Rays will have no further comment.” —AP
