S.I. rally on 3rd ann’y of Garner slay

PROTESTERS will mark the third anniversary of Eric Garner’s death Monday with a demonstration at the Staten Island ferry terminal in St. George, just blocks from where the neighborhood fixture died at the hands of a cop accused of using a banned chokehold.

The 7 p.m. protest will renew calls for charges against the cops involved in Garner’s death, including Officer Daniel Pantaleo, the officer whose arm is seen around Garner’s neck in video that went viral after Garner’s death. A Staten Island grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo in December 2014.

Garner’s family has pursued federal charges and met with officials last month, but left with no indication that Pantaleo or any officers at the scene will be punished.

Monday’s demonstration follows a graveside service Sunday that featured Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr, and the mothers of Tamir Rice, Amadou Diallo and Michael Brown, who were all killed after clashes with police.

Although the city settled with Garner’s estate for $5.9 million, family supporters said there is no equating payouts with justice.

“Now, there will be some that say the city settled for some money with some of the families,” said the Rev. Al Sharpton during a sermon at New Hope Baptist Church in Elizabeth, N.J., before the cemetery visit. “You can’t pay for somebody’s life. You can’t pay for the right to kill us. You can’t monetize the worth of their life.”

Garner, 43, died July 17, 2014, when cops were arresting him for allegedly selling loose, untaxed cigarettes near Bay St.

His last words, “I can’t breathe,” have become a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement.
