Hot seats loom for kin in Russia probe
JARED KUSHNER, Donald Trump Jr. and Paul Manafort could testify before congressional committees next week as questions swirl around their roles in alleged Russian election meddling.
They are under scrutiny for a June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer, lobbyist and businessman after being told that Moscow was supporting then-candidate Donald Trump and offering dirt on Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
Lawmakers have clamored to speak to the Team Trump figures, and a lawyer for senior Trump adviser Kushner told reporters that his team “arranged Mr. Kushner’s interview with the senate for July 24.”
“He will continue to cooperate and appreciates the opportunity to assist in putting this matter to rest,” attorney Abbe Lowell said in a statement, adding that his client has previously offered to testify.
Kushner’s interview with the Senate Intelligence Committee, first reported by ABC, will not be open to the public, though his brother-in-law and former Trump campaign manager Manafort could face the cameras next Wednesday.
The Senate Judiciary Committee announced that Trump Jr. and Manafort, who both also attended the 2016 meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya and others, have been asked to speak at a public hearing next Wednesday.
Manafort’s spokesman Jason Maloni told the Daily News around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening that he had received a letter from the committee “in the last 20 minutes.”
He did not have an answer about whether the former campaign manager will accept the invite.
