REYES HELPS METS WALK OFF:

Reyes’ infield single gives Mets walkoff win over Cards

-

This was like old times for the Mets, Jose Reyes using his speed to help them in a big spot. On Thursday, it was Reyes busting to first base and sliding in safely to secure a walk-off, infield single and give the Mets a 3-2 victory after they trailed by a run heading into the bottom of the eighth.

Reyes hit a grounder to Matt Carpenter, who was playing deep in the infield dirt. Cardinals pitcher Trevor Rosenthal didn’t initially move to cover first base, allowing Reyes to reach safely. The walk-off was the Mets’ third of the season.

Wilmer Flores tied the game with a pinchhit, solo home run in the eighth inning off Brett Cecil, his eighth homer of the season and first since June 24.

Seth Lugo had arguably his best start of the season, not giving up a hit until Greg Garcia’s two-out double in the fifth inning. But Lugo departed in the seventh with the game tied and unable to earn a win. He gave up one run in 62⁄3 innings — a Tommy Pham RBI double in the sixth — allowing four hits and a walk while striking out five.

Pham gave St. Louis the lead with a solo homer off Erik Goeddel in the eighth. Duda’s 17th homer of the season had put the Mets (43-50) up 1-0 in the second.
