Qns. bus kills skateboarder
A 25-YEAR-OLD man struck by a city bus when he darted into traffic after his runaway skateboard has died, police said Saturday.
Kevin Zeng succumbed to his injuries at Jamaica Hospital hours after being hit by the Q46 bus on Union Turnpike near Grand Central Parkway in Forest Hills, Queens, about 6:30 p.m. Friday, cops said.
Zeng was walking on the sidewalk when he dropped his skateboard and it rolled into traffic. He scrambled after his beloved board — right into the path of an approaching bus, according to police.
The driver saw Zeng and tried to veer out of the way but the skateboarder kept running into the traffic lane and was clipped by the bus’ passenger side.
The bus driver remained at the scene and faced no immediate charges. No other injuries were reported.
Zeng’s grieving family declined comment Saturday.
As of Friday, 52 pedestrians have been struck and killed by motor vehicles in the five boroughs — 20 fewer than this time a year earlier.
That’s a 27% drop as Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative to drastically drive down traffic deaths continues into its third year.
