WHEELS FALLING OFF

-

It’s now a 9.89 ERA for Zack Wheeler over his last six starts after giving up five runs in the Mets’ comeback win on Saturday, including four runs in the first. Matt Joyce began the game with a homer and Matt Chapman hit a solo homer in the third.

“The way I’ve been pitching lately is not acceptable,” Wheeler said. “I expect a lot better out of myself. I tried to limit the damage the best that I could today. These guys fought back.”

Wheeler allowed seven hits, and he walked four batters for the second straight game. Wheeler found his slider, but walks and leaving pitches over the middle hurt him. on Saturday, turning a fielder’s choice in the second and a ground out in the ninth. He went 2-for-5.

Cabrera said he felt fine at third and will be comfortable going back there. “Oh yeah, absolutely,” he said. “I’m gonna do my job at any position.”

When Walker (left hamstring tear) does return, Collins envisions Cabrera playing third and shifting around when needed, playing shortstop and second when Jose Reyes and Walker are given days off. Reyes will remain the primary shortstop, Cabrera’s longtime position he was moved to second last month.

Collins’ plan, of course, assumes Cabrera will still be a Met beyond the July 31 trade deadline. He could be moved in an effort to create room for top prospect Amed Rosario, the shortstop who could be called up after the deadline.
