Stopping those subway slobs

-

Brooklyn: As a retired transit authority bus operator with more than 25 years of experience, I know that while the TA does everything it can to rid its equipment of garbage, leftover food, newspapers, etc., the problem rests with the public. Mayor de Blasio has no issue with people eating on buses and trains? He is dead wrong. Many times upon bringing my bus to a halt, cans of half full beer or soda would come rolling down from the back, spewing contents all over the floor.

A bus or train is usually out on the rails or road for upward of 20 hours a day, and by that time, those responsible for these disgusting messes had left enough food and debris to fill up a 50-gallon garbage pail. For the mayor to insinuate it’s OK to allow people to eat onboard will only embolden them and lead to even further messes. What does he know? De Blasio never takes a train or bus.

Just like charity begins at home, the cleanliness of a bus or train is directly related to your compliance to take your garbage with you when leaving. Let’s enact a solution to this problem and let it begin with you: the public. Or don’t complain. Dennis Pascale

Garbage in, garbage out

Brooklyn: If my memory serves me correctly, I seem to recall an idea that went into effect a few years ago to reduce garbage in the subways. Didn’t some brain surgeon or rocket scientist come up with the novel idea of removing the trash cans from the subways, ergo reducing the amount of garbage in and around the tracks? How’s that working anyway? Peter G. Orsi

Rotten Juice

Manhattan: Watching that O.J. hearing reminded me of just how much I despise the dude. In a totally different way, he is as arrogant and narcissistic as our current President. That said, each could probably kill somebody and lose precious few of their adoring fan base. (Oh, wait, O.J. did that already.) I agree with Kato Kaelin’s comment in your paper on Friday: “He was borderline arrogant. It seemed like he was saying everything he could to not get parole. Then I heard his daughter, Arnelle. She spoke from the heart. She should have been the main act. You could feel her compassion.” Yep. I agree. Arnelle was the only thing human I could detect in that room yesterday, and I’m including those creepy parole board judges!

Free at last

Hicksville, L.I.: The Juice is loose. Good for him! The only thing he should be jailed for is unleashing the Kardashians on us.

Kevin Abberton

Fair is fair

Bronx: For those who feel O.J. shouldn’t be free, you are encouraging corrupt justice. You can’t expect someone guilty of one crime to serve time for a crime he was found not guilty of. If he did it matters not. He most likely served more time than most would’ve. Maybe deserved or not. Hopefully, he will be humble in his last years and enjoy his family.

Stephen Hill

Not your poster child

Manhattan: Re “Ron Goldman’s family blasts prospect of O.J. Simpson getting parole: ‘The killer will walk free and do whatever he wants’ ” (July 20): I have great sympathy for the Goldman family, but Mr. Goldman’s disdain for “the whole system that gives second chances to violent felons, for that matter anyone in jail” is painfully ignorant. The generations of young men of color who’ve been incarcerated under discriminatory drug statutes and other minor offenses most definitely deserve the chances the system has robbed them of. Whether you think this represents a second, third or fourth chance for O.J. is another story, but applying his example to incarcerated persons in general is a dangerous pursuit. Julia Mekler

Blackboard jungle

Brooklyn: Re “Girl fight leads to school ‘gun’ find” (July 21): So two girls fight at summer school and a fake gun is found in the bag of one of the girls. You generally attend summer school when you have failed subjects or your reading and or math score is not up to par. Lord only knows the type of discipline problems these girls are during the regular school year. They should be bounced from summer school and made to repeat the grade in September. Knowing the NYC school system, both will be passed on to the next grade. No discipline and blaming the teacher will continue as always. Ed Greenspan

Danger in the darkness

Fresh Meadows: The two recent incidents in Queens in which two young women were attacked and sexually assaulted in Kissena and Colden parks again should be a wakeup call to everyone not to be in the parks after dusk, for their own safety. There are signs all over our parks advising people that the parks close at dusk and that nobody should be in them after dark. Fortunately, the police nailed the animal who did this to these women. Why is anyone, especially young women, out walking in the park after dark? Follow the guidelines and leave the parks after dusk. John Amato

Racism, pure and plain

Springfield Gardens: Voicer John McCarthy: As a black woman who personally knows dedicated, successful, law-abiding black men, I have a few words for you: Your racism is showing. When you catalog a few men you deem bad examples and categorically include all black men in a negative light, you are an example of exactly what’s wrong with society. By the way, President Obama is a far better example and role model of a man than President Trump will ever be. Lynne Savage

Just a hater

Brooklyn: Voicer John McCarthy, you are a sad example of an American. Actually, you seem more at home in a racist setting. You’re just a hater who’s mad that black men are doing well despite mistakes. Maybe if you worked hard and had some talent, you could have gone further in life. You, sir, are an embarrassment to this great country. Maybe you should go put your white hood on so at least we know who you are.

Sen. Hero, President Bum

Howard Beach: I was one of those people who foolishly thought that after Donald Trump made his disgusting comment about John McCain not being a war hero because he likes people who aren’t captured, it would be a campaign-ender for him. How wrong I was. How anyone could forgive this despicable comment, especially coming from a man who got five deferments to avoid going to Vietnam, is beyond comprehension. Trump has proved to America and the entire world that he is not fit to shine McCain’s shoes. While I do not agree with McCain on many political issues, I have always felt him to be a man of integrity and honor. Wishing a genuine hero a speedy recovery. Barbara Berg

Tarnished Silver

Brooklyn: According to Voicer Gary Schwartz, just because Sheldon Silver is 73 years old, a judge should show “mercy” because 12 years is like a “life sentence.” That’s hogwash. Age alone should not matter in terms of issuing a jail term, nor should weighing the “greater good” of a lifetime of political actions versus “mistakes.” Betrayal of the public trust, whether the politician is 18 or 80 is still betrayal. Silver for decades skirted and avoided a variety of ethics requirements by refusing to explain his source of income from a law firm that stood to make millions based on rulings made by Silver’s legislators, most of whom blindly followed his wishes in terms of their voting. The fact that another court determined what constitutes the fine-line definition of a “political act” should not absolve Silver from restitution for his cumulative actions, which were made in his best self-interests and not that of the state. But Silver, the slime ball that he is, will likely die outside of prison while fighting these charges as so many other older corrupt politicians had done so before him once they were caught late in their political careers. No justice will ever be served if this is how the city deals with older, corrupt politicians.

Robert T. Mruczek

They’re all guilty

AP Mastic, L.I.: Please everyone, stop saying Shelly Silver did a lot of good for New York. Silver is a criminal who belongs in jail. Anything he did was based on him putting more money in his pockets. He abused his position for his own benefits. We all know Albany has been a cesspool of corruption for decades. Silver is a large part of that corruption. Our governor said he was going to clean out the corruption until it got too close to him, then he dissolved the commission. Democrats condone corruption then talk about how bad Republicans are. Democrats condone lies and corruption as long as they’re done by Democrats. They are a very sad group. Gene Lindsay
