SUV driver blamed in Met-North horror
THE WOMAN behind the wheel of an SUV that was struck by a Metro-North train in Westchester County in 2015 — killing six people — caused the deadly crash, the National Transportation Board said on Tuesday.
The NTSB also concluded that the Feb. 3 accident, which killed five passengers along with the SUV driver, was made worse because a long section of electrified rail was uprooted and pierced the train intact without breaking into smaller pieces.
The driver, Ellen Brody, stopped near the tracks in Valhalla between the lowered crossing gates.
Witnesses said she got out of her SUV to inspect the damage before driving forward and being struck by the train.
Brody’s husband is suing Metro-North, the MTA and the train’s engineer, saying the crash was caused by a badly designed grade crossing and improper warning signs.
“There are substantial systemic issues at stake here, and, you know, somebody has to take it on,” Alan Brody said. “I’m dead serious about it. I have a reason to be dead serious about it. They (officials) didn’t lose anyone.”
