McCain: hope in the D.C. chaos

-

Almeria, Spain: We have met many wonderful, kind and open people who have reinforced our understanding and appreciation of the American people. I watched last year’s American elections with great interest. I must admit I thought neither candidate was truly worthy of the American people’s vote. However, I thought the post-election period would see progress in many issues also concerning the rest of the world. I do have to say, putting aside the ineptitude of the current President, I thought the Senate would continue to provide policies and legislation necessary for the American people and the world at large. I am now greatly disabused of that notion.

One glimmer of hope shone through the speech from Sen. John McCain (July 25), a man who would have made an exemplary President. A man of courage, intelligence, human understanding and compassion and I deeply hope there are sufficient other members of the Senate to look to his example. James Simpson

McCain strikes again

Yonkers: So Sen. McCain, a war hero, no matter what the Twidiot in Chief says, gets out of his hospital bed and comes to Congress. He speaks truth to power, and then votes yes on a terrible healthcare bill anyway. Which seems to be what he always does: appears to have strong opposing viewpoints but votes along with the herd of Repugnicans in the end, every time. Mr. McCain, how is this helpful? And if you don’t vote your conscience, maybe that’s why they don’t listen to you.

Modest Donald?

Woodland Park, N.J.: Donald Trump said that “No President has done anything near what he has done in the first six months.” He is right. However, that is not a compliment. John Dent

Respect for elders

Manhattan: I was shocked when MTA Chair Joe Lhota suggested taking the seats from trains to fit more people. As a 77- year-old woman who takes the L train frequently, this frightens me. Usually I am offered a seat on the train, but how can I be offered a seat when there are no seats? I am glad that Lhota is able to stand on a train, but what about the rest of us? Marilyn Levin

Naughty MTA

Ridgewood: The MTA is insane. They want to take away seats on some subway cars?! There aren't many as it is. People hog them. And most don’t even pay for them. And disabled people, who I know are disrespected by the MTA, do ride the trains and buses and can’t even get a seat. What happened to priority seating? Let the MTA ride their crummy service and have to stand and they will change their stance awfully fast, won’t they? Amy Marino

Private could be fatal

Staten Island: Voicer Jeffrey Cohen suggests that the MTA should be privatized. Look how well that worked for Amtrak and the USPS. Victor Stanwick

Two sided story

Dumont, N.J.: Liberal Voicers like Carl Cruz-Hafner think that 11 million illegal, undocumented immigrants are some kind of joke. Mr. Hafner, call them whatever you want. They are here illegally and they do not belong here! There are laws against being in someone’s home illegally. It’s called home invading or trespassing. If you break those laws, then you are a criminal. There are laws against that type of behavior and that is illegal. All have to leave. They are criminals, every single one of them. Don’t go spouting off the liberal bumper sticker that says “The United States Is A Nation Of Immigrants.” That’s a leftist load of crap. The U.S. is not a nation of immigrants. It is a nation of laws and legal immigrants. Period. There is a clear cut difference. John Scott

Watch your language!

Manhattan: In the term “illegal immigrant,” the person is being described as an immigrant; the “illegal” part is their status. Nobody is calling people illegal, only the criminal act of entering our country without permission. Voicer Carl Cruz-Hafner’s ridiculous argument, like many on the far left, seeks to portray those who disagree as hateful, unenlightened bigots because you can’t logically counter their reasoning. We all have locks on our doors to prevent people from illegally entering our homes, is CruzHafner suggesting that if people broke in and moved into his bedroom they would be undocumented resident of his home? Of course not. They would be illegal occupants, and he’d call the police. Gary Taustine

They’re coming for you!

Oceanside, L.I.: To Voicer Carl Cruz-Hafner: You return home from vacation to find an immigrant family living in your home and refusing to leave. According to you, they are not illegal merely undocumented, therefore do not call the police and enjoy your new family. Joseph Rebando

Greedy Catholic Church

Silver Spring, Md.: Concerning the saga of sexual abuse in a German Catholic church choir, we should note that the Catholic church is subsidized by German taxpayers to the tune of billions of dollars per year. That should stop. Oh, and the bishops in the U.S. want taxpayer dollars for their private schools too, through school voucher plans loved by Trump, Betsy DeVos and Mike Pence. Edd Doerr

Black or white sport?

Indianapolis: Why does everything in today’s world have to come down to racism? The Rooney rule should apply to the number of white players in the league. African Americans are concerned about the total number of blacks associated with the GM role, how about the white bitching about the total number of white players in the NBA? Basketball is definitely a black sport, undeniable. Let it rest. I’m tired to death about hearing how the white guy is screwing over the blacks. Greg Sego

Skin color, big deal!

Morristown, N.J.: Why aren’t white people better represented in the NBA? Isn’t that racist against white people? If African Americans need a quota for things, then we want one for white people in basketball and everyone needs to be fully represented! How is that fair?

The perfect headshot

Walden, N.Y.: On Tuesday (July 25), my husband treated me to an awesome Yankees game. It was a fun night, and they won! But towards the end, Aaron Judge hit a lightning fastball that hit an elderly man. Medics came, looked like they wrapped his head, and they escorted him and others out! It all seemed frightening! Thankfully the man walked out, but I was wondering if Judge would give this man a well-deserved signed ball? The kid seems super awesome, I’m hoping he is the new shining star for the Yankees! Gail Ellis

Take out the trash, MSG

Gaithersburg, Md.: Why trade Carmelo Anthony and keep Lance Thomas and Joakim Noah’s big contracts? Both players are the real flaws in the franchise. It would be best to get rid of them. It’s always a good basketball decision to get rid of bad players and keep good ones. I would really enjoy reading smart articles. Marlon Hamilton

Driving the wrong way

Mamaroneck, N.Y.: Under a new deal brokered by the Trump administration with General Motors, the Chevy Bolt plant in Michigan will immediately re-open. It will manufacture the new Chevy Dolt, a coal-fired vehicle endorsed by President Trump who tweeted “Everyone knows the stupid electric car market is dead, right? The Dolt is going to be HUGE. THIS is progress. JOBS. Made in America!” Paul Matthews

Static cleanser

REUTERS Bloomingburg, N.Y.: To Voicer Linder Sperling: The station is WMTR in Morristown, N.J. The coverage map from Radio-Locator.com shows “distance” daytime coverage for Queens and “fringe” for night time coverage. The three types of signal coverage from AM stations are local, distance and fringe — all explained at the radio-locater website. The static noise you hear could be no antenna attached to the AM terminal, if so equipped. Fluorescent lamps are big culprit, so are computers and more. Good luck tuning in. Steve Schumm

Abandoning the elephant

Williamsburg, Va.: MSNBC host Joe Scarborough is leaving the GOP and will register as an independent voter. Sure could have fooled me. John Lemandri
