YANKS GAMEDAY

-

Luis Severino is pitching like an “ace” — even if his manager would prefer not to use the term.

Severino threw seven strong innings on Wednesday afternoon, leading the Yankees to a 9-5 victory over the Reds at Yankee Stadium. The 23-year-old righty allowed two unearned runs on three hits. He walked two and struck out nine.

Severino (8-6, 3.03 ERA) had his consecutive scoreless innings streak snapped at 17 on Eugenio Suarez’s RBI double in the seventh.

“He’s thrown the best all year for us,” Joe Girardi said of Severino before the game. “Call him what you want.”

The Yankees (53-46) completed a two-game, mini-sweep of the Reds — and have now won three in a row and five of six overall heading into their crucial four-game series with the Rays.

Clint Frazier finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, a walk and a run scored. Didi Gregorius added a two-run homer — his 16th of the year. Gregorius has now homered in three straight games for the first time in his career. Todd Frazier hit his first homer as a Yankee. Struggling middle-of-the-order bats Gary Sanchez (RBI double) and Matt Holliday (RBI single) also made an impact.

Adam Duvall hit a three-run homer in the top of the eighth off Luis Cessa to bring Cincinnati within four.

Aaron Judge (rest) got the day off. He’ll be back on Thursday.
