Nats rally, win late; Sox stave off sweep

Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Lind had two-run doubles in a seven-run eighth inning to help host Washington rally past Milwaukee, 8-5, on Wednesday night.

Bryce Harper’s single in the first inning extended his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games, but he was later ejected.

l Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg was placed on the 10-day disabled list retroactiv­e to Monday.

l Marlins leadoff hitter Dee Gordon homered on the first pitch thrown by Yu Darvish, and things got no better for Texas as Miami set a franchise record for runs in a 22-10 road victory.

l Paul DeJong homered and Randal Grichuk had a career-high four hits as host St. Louis beat Colorado, 10-5, to complete a three-game sweep.

l Brandon Belt doubled in the goahead run in the seventh in support of starter Jeff Samardzija, who threw seven strong innings in San Francisco’s 2-1 home victory over Pittsburgh.

l In Phoenix, J.D. Martinez homered twice and Ketel Marte hit an inside-thepark two-run homer in Arizona’s 10-3 victory over Atlanta.

l Jake Arrieta pitched two-hit ball into the seventh, and the visiting Cubs beat the White Sox, 8-3, to move into first in the NL Central.

l Chris Sale (13-4) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball, top prospect Rafael Devers became the youngest Red Sox player to hit a home run since Tony Conigliaro in September 1965, and Boston beat Seattle on the road, 4-0, to salvage the final game of the series.

l Eric Hosmer had five hits, including his first major league grand slam, and visiting Kansas City extended its winning streak to a season-high eight games with a 16-2 rout of Detroit.

l Justin Smoak hit a game-tying two-run homer in the ninth and Kendrys Morales followed with a game-winning blast as Toronto rallied to beat Oakland, 3-2.

l Bradley Zimmer homered and drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning double and Cleveland matched a season high with its sixth straight win, 10-4, over the visiting Los Angeles Angels.

DESPERATE DIVE

Julio Jones might be in over his head in his search for a lost earring. The Falcons wide receiver hired a dive team to help him find an earring that fell into Lake Lanier in Georgia when Jones was jet skiing near training camp. The diamond earring is estimated to be worth over $100,000, according to WXIA. —Brett Bodner
