MS-13 pair busted in Qns. killing
TWO MS-13 members have been arrested for fatally shooting a fellow gang-banger moments after he bought a beer at a Queens bodega, police said Friday.
Roberto Abrego, 23, and Jose Alvarenga, 27, are accusing of killing Fernando Gonzalez-Chavez, 39, at the 7&7 Deli on 162nd St. near Station Road in Murray Hill on May 31.
Gonzalez-Chavez had just bought a beer from the bodega and was standing in the store’s entrance when a man in a hoodie walked up and shot him in the chest. He died at the scene.
“(The victim) had a tattoo that said 13,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said Friday. “Initially, we thought it was a gang-related issue. We weren't sure if it was Suerno 13 or MS 13. Turns out to be MS13.”
Cops tracked Abrego and Alvarenga to an MS-13 “safe house” on Princeton St. in Hempstead, Long Island, the sources said. During a 2 a.m. raid on Thursday, cops found the two suspects and recovered three .9-mm handguns and a .22-caliber pistol.
One of the two men confessed to the killing, sources said.
Abrego and Alvarenga are each facing murder and weapons possession charges.
Gonzalez-Chavez had fallen on hard times and been mostly living on the streets, friends said. He had just left a nearby bar when he went to the deli.
Cops were still trying to sort out a motive behind the slaying.
“We’re still peeling this thing back,” Boyce said. “This looks like it's a Hempstead issue.”
