STARBURY TALKS ROSE DEAL

Stephon Marbury didn’t get the memo. The former Knicks guard took to Twitter in disgust of the one-year, $2.1 million deal fellow former Knicks guard Derrick Rose signed with the Cavaliers earlier this week.

“I think it’s a crime that Derrick Rose is being paid this amount of money, when you have guys that can’t chew gum and walk making more,” Marbury tweeted.

He added: “I pray that’s what he says but Lebron should of stepped in. Maybe he’s leaving so he doesn’t care but my man should be eating healthier ??”

The NBA has changed since Marbury last stepped on the court in 2009 — Rose’s Rookie of the Year campaign — and if someone were to say Rose would sign for the veteran’s minimum by age 29, then Marbury would have a really, really good point.

But the reality is nobody in the NBA views Rose as the MVP caliber player he was before his injuries, and they likely never will.

Rose inked the minimum deal with the reigning Eastern Conference champions just one year removed from the five year, $94.8 million maximum contract he signed with Chicago after his MVP season in 2011. And he was lucky to have done so. In the first four seasons of his career Rose was a three-time All Star and MVP with averages of 21 points and 30 wins above replacement while earning $5.3 million per year.

Compare those numbers to the 17.3 points and 4.4 wins above replacement Rose averaged since tearing his ACL in 2012, and the only “crime” would be the $18.9 million average annual salary he collected while appearing in less than half of his team’s games across five seasons. Rose hinted he had turned down other offers to play with a contender, but Marbury suggested that the pay cut may be a sign that Rose is on his way out.
