Nationals add Phils’ Kendrick to boost lineup

Howie Kendrick is excited for the chance to play for a World Series contender — even if he has to bat toward the bottom of the batting order. Kendrick was traded from the Philadelph­ia Phillies to the Washington Nationals on Friday night for minor league pitcher McKenzie Mills. The Phillies will send cash to the Nationals to cover part of the $3.55 million remaining in Kendrick’s $10 million salary.

l Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas homered off emergency starter Rick Porcello, who took over when David Price went back on the disabled list because of inflammati­on in his left elbow, and the Kansas City Royals beat the Red Sox 4-2 at Fenway for their season-high ninth straight win.

l The Baltimore Orioles have acquired righthande­r Jeremy Hellickson from the Philadelph­ia Phillies for outfielder Hyn Soo Kim and a Double-A left-hander.

l Brent Suter tossed seven scoreless innings and Milwaukee edged the visiting Cubs 2-1, moving within a half-game of NL Central-leading Chicago.

ANOTHER ’BOYS DL SUSPENDED

A third Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman will miss the start of the season because of a suspension.

The NFL said Friday that defensive end Damontre’ Moore has been suspended without pay for the first two games of the regular season for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy. Defensive end David Irving and defensive tackle Randy Gregory already were suspended.

LIBERTY GETS RID OF FEVER

Tina Charles scored 25 points, Sugar Rodgers made two free throws with 11.2 seconds left and the New York Liberty beat the host Indiana Fever 85-84. Charles drew a double team in the paint and found Bria Hartley for an open 3-pointer with 1:19 left to give New York an 83-82 lead. After empty possession­s at both ends, Indiana’s Erica Wheeler had a layup blocked out of bounds by Kiah Stokes and Candice Dupree missed a baseline jumper.

PREDS SHOW JOHANSEN $$

The Nashville Predators have signed top center Ryan Johansen to an eight-year, $64 million contract, the largest deal the franchise has ever handed out. General manager David Poile noted he’s been looking for a No. 1 center for years and believes Johansen is poised to become an elite player in the NHL.

KUCHAR BREAKS THE SPELL

Matt Kuchar rallied to make the cut in the RBC Canadian Open on Friday, a day after fighting dizzy spells. Coming off a second-place finish Sunday in the British Open, Kuchar shot a 4-under 68 to reach 5 under — leaving him seven strokes behind second-round leader Martin Flores at Glen Abbey. On Thursday, Kuchar had a couple of dizzy spells and sought medical attention during the round.

DURANT GOES GLOBAL

Kevin Durant is in India to help the NBA make inroads in a nation of 1.3 billion. Durant took part in a camp in New Delhi, where the Golden State Warriors star helped set a Guinness world record for the largest basketball lesson — 3,459 participan­ts across multiple venues.
