Chapo: Extradition wrong
JAILED MEXICAN drug czar Joaquin (El Chapo) Guzman, a two-time escape artist from prisons south of the border, wants his case tossed — claiming he was improperly extradited to Brooklyn, according to court papers filed Thursday.
Guzman’s lawyers claim the Mexican government initially only agreed to transport the diminutive drug kingpin to Texas or California.
His defense team wants Brooklyn Federal Court Justice Brian Cogan to toss the massive indictment, against Guzman — claiming it violates the extradition treaty between the U.S. and Mexico. Lawyers are also questioning the feds ability to seize $14 billion in assets.
The legal team has repeatedly clashed with Brooklyn federal prosecutors over the Sinaloa cartel leader’s digs at the Manhattan Correctional Complex and whether he should be taken out of solitary confinement.
For years, Mexican officials refused to send Guzman (photo) to the U.S.
They changed their tune after he twice escaped from a pair of the country’s top jails, hiding in a laundry cart during one bid and driving a motorbike through a mile-long tunnel dug from a prison shower the second time.
Guzman faces life in prison if convicted of the 17 charges against him, which include money laundering, manufacturing and distributing a host of drugs. His trial is slated for April.
