Frazier’s fine with missing Miller time

-

CLEVELAND — Clint Frazier wasn’t upset that he won’t get to face Andrew Miller in Cleveland this weekend. “Not really,” Frazier said with a laugh before going 1-for-4 with a double and committing a throwing error in the first inning of the Yankees’ 5-1 loss to the Indians on Thursday night at Progressive Field.

Frazier was dealt from the Indians to the Yankees at the trade deadline last season in exchange for Miller, who was just placed on the disabled list with patellar tendinitis in his right knee on Wednesday.

Frazier, 22, did say he was “excited” to finally get the chance to play in Cleveland — the place where he thought his career would start. The Indians took Frazier No. 5 overall in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft.

Initially, Frazier put a lot of pressure on himself to live up to the expectations that come with being traded for someone of Miller’s stature. But after struggling with the Yankees at Triple-A Scranton last year, Frazier began to steadily improve this season.

Injuries to Aaron Hicks and Dustin Fowler gave him an opportunity at the big-league level, and he’s taken full advantage of it, posting 14 extra-base hits and 17 RBI in 25 games.

The A’s were interested in Frazier in their talks with the Yankees about Sonny Gray, but the Bombers quickly said he wasn’t on the table. The Yankees ultimately got Gray from Oakland in exchange for James Kaprielian, Jorge Mateo and Fowler.

“I wasn’t worried about getting traded this year or last year,” Frazier said. “Sometimes it catches you by surprise, but it’s a sigh of relief to still be a New York Yankee.”

Frazier was looking forward to catching up with Indians outfielder Bradley Zimmer. The two came up together in the minor-leagues. Zimmer has had his own success, with an .794 OPS and eight homers in 68 games.

“I really don’t know what to do because you can’t just run into the tag, so I almost feel like do you teach your baserunners just to run him over? And that’s not what you want,” Girardi said. “So it’s something that I think we have to think about in the game. The other thing that you’ve always been taught is to dive away or dive into their feet and that’s dangerous too. It’s a really difficult play.”
