Mayor backing Monserrate foe

- Erin Durkin

MAYOR DE BLASIO on Sunday endorsed Queens Assemblyman Francisco Moya, who is running for City Council against a disgraced ex-pol convicted of domestic violence and corruption.

The contest pits Moya against Hiram Monserrate, who is trying to make a comeback after he was expelled from the state Senate for slashing his girlfriend’s face with glass, and did jail time for stealing city money in a separate fraud case.

“I need him to be in the City Council as a partner and ally,” said de Blasio, who appeared with Moya on Sunday at Antioch Baptist Church in Corona.

It’s the mayor’s first endorsement in a City Council race.

Despite Monserrate’s track record, the Democratic primary contest — for the Corona and East Elmhurst seat held by Julissa Ferreras-Copeland, who opted not to run for reelection — is viewed as competitive.

Hizzoner did not mention Monserrate in his remarks, instead praising Moya for his work on behalf of children.

“I ask for your support for this good man,” he said. Moya in turn endorsed de Blasio for reelection.

Public Advocate Letitia James also backed Moya Sunday.
