Hizzoner’s bid for legal $ gets static

- Greg B. Smith

MAYORAL candidate Sal Albanese and radio hosts Curtis Sliwa and Frank Morano don’t want the taxpayers picking up the tab for Mayor de Blasio’s lawyers.

On Sunday, the trio filed suit in Manhattan Supreme Court to block de Blasio’s demand for more than $12 million to pay lawyers representing the mayor and his top aides in investigations of the mayor’s fund-raising tactics.

The Manhattan U.S. attorney and Manhattan district attorney closed the probes in March without bringing criminal charges.

“The public will only pay for legal fees associated with government work,” Eric Phillips, de Blasio’s press secretary, said. “To say this suit is frivolous would be giving it too much legitimacy.”

The mayor at first vowed not to take a dime for his lawyers, but changed his mind in July after the city Conflict of Interest Board restricted his ability to raise donations for a legal defense fund.
