Justice in black, white and blue

-

Johnson City, Tenn.: I am a white female (“Black victims of white cops should get the same love, support and justice as Justine Damond,” column, July 25). I am just as appalled as Shaun King concerning the shocking actions of police officers around our country. I lived within miles of the Trayvon Martin shooting and it was the center of discussion with everyone I knew of all colors and none of us believed he was justifiably shot and killed. Nor with any of the other well-published police shootings of innocent people.

So I am offended when King says that blacks and whites united around Justine, but that we don’t for the black victims. I saw the news and protests and the crowd was all races and ethnicities. So what help is it to portray that white people don’t care? It’s just not true. That is not to say that the treatment and prosecution of these police officers is fair. It’s corrupted. Let’s address that and not feed the flames that blacks and whites don’t unite and feel for each other’s losses.

As for the examples of other black victims of police brutality and murder that King mentioned. Well, the reason they likely didn’t receive the same support is because we didn’t hear about them. I know I never heard those stories. Susan Jordan

Bike off

Staten Island: Make Citi Bikes easier to use? I say ban them altogether. Bikes have no place on city streets. It’s too dangerous. City streets are for cars. Bikes should be relegated to parks. This is another example of the idiotic attempt by Michael Bloomberg and his equally idiotic transportation czar, Janette Sadik-Khan, to force drivers off the roads while continuing to subsidize mass transit, a service we don’t use. Not going to happen. Robert K. Greco

Voicing Access

Manhattan: Imagine my surprise when I received a phone call from a representative of Access-A-Ride regarding my most recent adventure. She apparently read my Voice of People letter about the extra, unnecessary 35-minute trip home a week ago. During our conversation, she said this problem would be under review and that, hopefully, riders would no longer be subjected to these unnecessary trips. So, as Peter Pan once said, “If you believe, clap your hands.” Zelda Multz

Getting the facts straight

Staten Island: I read your article about Nicholas Manz, 28 (“Saved from two ODs in 12 hours,” Aug. 2). The article stated he was saved by medics who administered naloxone. The facts are Engine 162 of the FDNY were there both times. The members of Engine 162 administered the naloxone at 7 a.m. the next morning, thus saving Manz for the second time. A small note, but let’s give credit where credit is due. Kudos to Engine 162 for a job well done. Lt. Richard Trotta

Beach blues

Edison, N.J.: Although I now live out of town, I thoroughly enjoy going to Beach Ninth St. in Far Rockaway. What does it take for the city to put one extra “blue mat” on the sand between Beach Ninth and Beach 10th Sts.? I was in contact with a worker at the Parks Department who, I thought, was going to help with this problem. After months of practically being assured that the mat would be placed, he informed me that his supervisor said there was one already on Beach Ninth St. Why can’t this supervisor understand that there is still one needed in the requested location? It would help all beachgoers that come in from the parking lot. Come on! One extra blue mat is going to break the city’s bank? Have a heart.

History for the Mooch

Carmel, N.Y.: “The Golden Milestone — 2,500 Years of Italian Contributions” is a book of Italian and Italian American inventions, solutions, art and creations of all sorts for the betterment of humankind. It is a tome so worthwhile and illustrative of the Italian genius, talent, imagination and vision. As soon as I locate his new address, I will send a copy to Anthony Scaramucci. I hope it gives him a better perspective of how he might better use his gifts to enhance society.

Italian-American roll call

Astoria: To Voicer Rosario Iaconis: Many Italian-Americans do not know of Italy’s contribution to Western civilization. Many model themselves after what is portrayed in the media as being Italian — foul-mouthed tough guys. When you have Italian-American directors and producers constantly showing the lowest element of the culture, no wonder Italian-Americans are confused. They have sold out their people for the all mighty dollar. We need Italian-Americans to discover the heroic people of their culture. People like NYPD Detective Joseph Petrosino, who fought the mob in New York only to eventually get murdered by the Mafia in Sicily. John Basilone awarded the Medal of Honor for saving American lives during World War II. Father Vincent Capodanno, another Medal of Honor winner and potential saint, gave up his life for his men in Vietnam. Many Italian-Americans can quote lines from “Goodfellas” and “The Godfather,” but few know of these brave men. How sad. Robert Sorgini

Speaking as one

Kew Gardens Hills: Re the Daily News headline: “Grab ’em by Their Liberty” (Aug. 3). You joined the PC police to go ballistic over President Trump’s demand for English-speaking, highly skilled immigrants only. But Canada and Australia use the same merit-based system for their immigration policies. Trump should take his plan a step further by declaring English to be our nation’s official language and ordering all federal agencies and local agencies that receive federal funds to communicate with the public only in English. No more “press 1” for what was once our common language. Do people in China press 1 to continue in Mandarin? An old Chinese proverb says: “Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to fish and they feed themselves for a lifetime.” We hand out fish daily and our policy is floundering. Richard Reif

Can you understand me now?

Brooklyn: For years, I have heard people complain about talking on the phone to someone who does not speak English. Now that our President is doing something about it, why is the Daily News making a big stink about it?

Good news at last

Spotswood, N.J.: Unemployment is at its lowest in 16 years! Hopefully, people can start replacing all of those jobs lost in the last 10 years. Wall Street is at its highest point ever in history! That is great news for everyone here, and around the world. Hopefully people can start to let go of their hatred, and start appreciating the new success of America. Tom Scott

A presentation dishonored

Haverstraw, N.Y.: Congratulations to army medic Jim McCloughan on receiving the Medal of Honor, the highest military award for outstanding bravery. However, to be awarded this honor by a person who had avoided military duty five times because his feet hurt, and refers to a wounded American Navy pilot “captured by the enemy” to be of no use to him — that is disgusting! I believe a past recipient of this award should be the presenter. Just saying!

Sarah smile

STEPHEN MATUREN (AFP) West Islip, L.I.: It is a pleasure to watch Sarah Huckabee Sanders give a White House news conference. I admire her tenacity, dignity, decency and decorum. Also, a big pat on the back for her handling those aggressive, disruptive attitudes of those reporters. Good luck. Carmel Harrigan

Deadly surgery

Manhattan: When will women find out they are enough? How many times must women seek out a fake doctor to get cosmetic surgery and die from the procedure until the law sees this as a murder? Love yourself the way you are and the world will love you back. Yvonne Carr

Cuomo’s rolling disaster

Manhattan: Friday, Aug. 4, I hit the MTA bus trifecta: Three buses in a row broke down on the way home. The MTA — improving nonstop! I guess Gov. Cuomo is not kidding with the extortion of the city for money. Everything is not enough to fix this man’s continued catastrophic destruction of the public transportation system of New York City. Nothing is too low to attempt in this man’s book. Save New York City ... Dump Cuomo! Tom Story
