Smuggle boat blows it

- Graham Rayman

DRUG RUNNERS tried to smuggle nearly 5,000 pounds of cocaine into the U.S. on a speedboat, prosecutors said Monday.

The scheme was foiled when a Navy pilot spotted the boat zooming near Mexico’s coast on July 8. The pilot alerted the Coast Guard, which intercepted the boat with a helicopter and a patrol boat.

About 4,720 pounds of cocaine, packaged in 107 plasticwrapped bales and stacked on the deck of the vessel, were found.

Five men, all Mexican citizens, were arrested and brought Friday to federal lockup in Manhattan, where they awaited arraignment.
