McConnell’s in Don doghouse

- Jason Silverstein

THROWN INTO President Trump’s naughty chair this week: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump on Thursday turned the Senate’s top Republican into the latest enemy from his own party, launching a full-on attack as he blamed McConnell for the GOP’s health care failure.

Trump even seemed to suggest the Kentucky Republican should step down if the party’s agenda remains stalled.

When asked if McConnell should relinquish his leadership role, Trump told reporters, “If he doesn’t get repeal and replace done, and if he doesn't get taxes done . . . then you can ask me that question.”

Trump refused to say anything in support of McConnell’s position, and called the GOP’s failure to win the vote on Obamacare repeal a “disgrace.”

Earlier, Trump unleashed two tweets ripping McConnell — marking the second day in a row Trump has shamed him on Twitter.

“Mitch, get back to work and put Repeal & Replace, Tax Reform & Cuts and a great Infrastructure Bill on my desk for signing. You can do it!” Trump, who is in the middle of a 17-day golf course vacation, wrote in one of the tweets.

McConnell did not immediately respond.

The Senate majority leader is the latest victim in an almost weekly trend of Trump attacking his own top colleagues and hinting at their imminent exits.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions and acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe endured the same treatment in the past few weeks.
