Todd Bowles isn’t revealing much about his quarterback plan for Saturday’s preseason opener, but here is what we know: Christian Hackenberg, the Jets’ possible quarterback of the future, will play in live game action for the first time in nearly 12 months.
It certainly is an important moment in Hackenberg’s young and developing career. But Bowles downplayed the significance Thursday, after the Jets practiced for the final time in Florham Park before taking on the Titans this weekend.
The Gang Green coach is simply looking for incremental growth from his 2016 secondround pick out of Penn State — nothing more, nothing less.
“I’m not expecting him to go out there and be Roger Staubach,” Bowles said. “If he is, so be it. But we’re trying to get him better. He’s 22 years old. The kid’s got to get a chance to play and make some mistakes and grow from it, come back from adversity and make good plays. And you just want to see his overall play, and as the preseason goes, you want to see him progress and then see where he is.”
No one is expecting Hackenberg to play like a Hall of Famer in just his third competitive NFL game, all of them in the preseason. But there has to be some baseline level that would constitute a successful performance, right?
“Well he’s not going to be Danny White either,” Bowles joked. “If you want me to go down the
