Anderson catching on fast

On the sixth play of the Jets’ opening drive Saturday night, Robby Anderson broke away from the huddle and jogged to the far right side of the field at MetLife Stadium. The second-year receiver looked ahead at Titans cornerback Logan Ryan and made his presnap read. He noticed Ryan playing off-coverage and saw an opportunity for a big play.

Josh McCown took the snap, and Anderson sprinted ahead, leaving Ryan in his tracks. McCown stepped up and unleashed a soaring throw down the right sideline that floated in between Ryan and safety Kevin Byard and into the waiting arms of Anderson, who fought for the end zone but was tackled out of bounds two yards short for a 53-yard gain. Two plays later, Charone Peake caught a four-yard TD pass.

If the Jets offense is going to be anywhere close to adequate this season — which is a lofty goal — Anderson must have a breakout campaign. And he showed signs of that ability Saturday night in a 7-3 preseason victory over the Titans. Anderson finished with three catches for 71 yards. He was elevated to the top of the depth chart at receiver last week after Quincy Enunwa was placed on injured reserve because of a bulging disc in his neck.

“Speed is a premium in this league, and he has it in droves and he can really roll,” McCown said of Anderson. “So when you have that kind of speed, the sky’s the limit for you, really.”

Anderson joined the Jets as an undrafted free agent last spring and caught 42 passes for 587 yards and two TDs in his rookie season. Now he’s the second-most experienced receiver on the active roster. After Saturday’s win, Anderson gave credit to McCown for the long completion. “He dropped a dime,” Anderson said. “He made it easy on my part to make that catch.”
