IN ‘VANGUARD’ OF EVIL CREEPS
THE HATE group that James Fields marched with before cops say he mowed down counterprotesters, killing one of them, has become a prominent neo-Nazi voice in the white nationalist movement, critics say. “They’ve definitely quickly become one of the premier organizations when it comes to the street demonstrations in the alt-right,” Keegan Hankes, a research analyst with the Southern Poverty Law Center, told the Daily News. Vanguard America was one of several hate groups that swarmed Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday for the coming together of white nationalists. Violence erupted Saturday and only got worse when Fields sped his gray Dodge Challenger into a crowd of people — killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer. Hours earlier, the Daily News photographed Fields carrying a shield emblazoned with the Vanguard America logo. The group denied that Fields, who traveled to Charlottesville from his home in Ohio, was a member. Members must have at least 80% European ancestry. Felons, addicts, “homosexuals, transsexual, adulterers, or any other form of sexual degeneracy” are banned, according to the group’s membership page.
