Gang safety tears pec vs. Titans

- BY DANIEL POPPER & MANISH MEHTA

JETS safety Doug Middleton suffered a pectoral injury in Saturday’s preseason victory over the Titans, and now tests have revealed the worst.

Middleton is dealing with a torn pec, according to a source. He’s expected to undergo surgery after receiving a second opinion.

Entering the preseason opener, Middleton was playing with the second-team defense as a backup safety alongside Rontez Miles.

Middleton sustained the pec injury in the fourth quarter Saturday while making a tackle on punt coverage. He dragged Tennessee returner Eric Weems down from behind and stayed down following the play. He walked off the field under his own power after trainers spent several minutes hovering over him.

The Jets hinted at the severity of Middleton’s injury earlier Sunday when they signed former Saints and Falcons safety Robenson Therezie and waived FB Algernon Brown.

Other safeties on the roster include Ronald Martin — who snagged a one-handed interception Saturday night — and Shamarko Thomas.

Rookies Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye are slated to start in Week 1.
