B’klyn sgt. among 2 killed in Iraq accident
TWO U.S. soldiers, one an Army sergeant from Brooklyn, were killed in Iraq in an artillery accident.
Brooklyn’s Sgt. Roshain Brooks, 30, and Sgt. Allen Stigler, 22, of Texas, both paratroopers assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, died Sunday in a mortar blast in northern Iraq, military officials said.
Army Col. Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, said Monday that an artillery unit was firing on an ISIS mortar position “when a mishap occurred.” Five other soldiers were wounded.
Manning said there’s no indication ISIS played a role in their deaths.
Stars and Stripes reported the unit was firing a 155-mm. round from an M777 Howitzer, and the round exploded prematurely.
