‘Many sides’ must call out evil

-

Brookline, Mass.: To say that there was “violence on all sides” of the situation in Charlottesville was just plain wrong. The neo-Nazis vow to kill people of color and the counterprotesters stood for the Bill of Rights and justice. Heather Heyer, a young anti-racist activist, is dead. She was killed in a white-supremacist terror attack. The “Three dead” headline we are seeing everywhere deflects attention from the real story: “32-year-old woman dead and 19 injured in white-supremacist terror!” Otherwise, it buries the lead and distorts the truth. The tragic helicopter crash is an unrelated story. Neo-Nazis, outnumbered 2 to 1 by brave anti-racists, killed and wounded people in the streets of Charlottesville.

We must end racism before its psychotic twin brother, fascism, kills again. Norah Dooley Jackson Heights: I was one of the almost 200 protesters marching in front of Trump Tower Sunday denouncing President Trump’s tepid response to the events in Charlottesville, including the killing of Heather Heyer. While there, I purchased a button from a street vendor, depicting President Putin holding a baby Trump in his hand who is waving the Soviet flag. The words “That’s my boy!” are superimposed on the picture.

I shall be wearing this button every day now until Donald J. Trump is brought up on charges of obstruction of justice and treason.

Presidential precedent

Wilton, Conn.: Gee, “Fire and fury like the world has never seen.” Donald J. Trump should read about Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And he should talk with George W. Bush and find out how “shock and awe” worked, or didn’t. Ian B. Edwards

No NoKo nuke war

Rio Rancho, N.M.: Now President Trump is threatening to drag us into a nuclear war with North Korea. This would put our lives at great risk. If even one North Korean nuclear bomb hit our country, the disastrous consequences would be beyond measure. In addition to the loss of lives, it would lessen our freedom, warp our country’s values and leave us in fear. Think 9/11, multiplied many, many times. Trump’s rash threat has put our country in a dangerous position. Would we attack North Korea with nuclear weapons? Or would we back down from Trump’s threat, thus weakening our credibility? With hotheads in charge of the U.S. and North Korean nuclear arsenals, we find ourselves in an extraordinarily dangerous situation. For the sake of America’s safety, we need someone to be the adult. Trump should not be allowed to start a nuclear war. Our previous Presidents understood: In a nuclear war, even if you win, you lose.

Check the record

Ossining, N.Y.: Voicer Paul Kapustka, like most Trump supporters, is seriously ill-informed. Kapustka claims the Daily News and others “praised” President Obama for giving North Korea $500 million. As with most everything President Trump spews, this is a lie. Obama never gave North Korea half a billion dollars. This is a false narrative derived from fact-challenged Fox News headlines. Obama did sanction North Korean exports, costing them $700 million. The $500 million Kapustka mentions was a contribution to the UN Green Climate Fund to help poor nations battle climate change. I can see how the typical Trump supporter could believe otherwise, since the current administration wallows in “alternative facts.”

Impressive achievements

Bellerose, L.I.: Why is the Daily News so anti-Trump? Here’s a man who has accomplished more in 200 days than your sacred cow Barack Obama did in eight years! Illegal immigration is down 53%, the GDP is up for the first time in years, the stock market is the highest in years, the VA is working again and small businesses are being freed of countless restrictions Obama put in chocking them, but you only print stupid juvenile letters your editor considers funny. You’re the FAKE NEWS that he tweets about!

Who can do it better?

Carlstadt, N.J.: What if President Trump said, “I give up; if you or anyone can do it any better with what’s going on today, here, it’s yours?” The whacked-out protesters, the awful racists — black and white — the terrorists of all religions and everyone who hates America in general would be tough to tackle. The corrupt political factions in the Senate and all of Congress, the military problems, let’s see what you all have to offer. You take over, what would you do? Let’s hear from all who want to have him removed — the pretty little snowflakes who have no jobs and still live at home and stand around protesting everything without even knowing what they are protesting about, just glad someone paid them to stand out there and yell. Good luck, America. The ball is in your court. Geri Sabia

Immigration hypocrites

Little Egg Harbor, N.J.: It makes me very angry to read in Voice of the People all these letters from people saying that their parents came to this county by proper channels and so they are so much better than those poor, starving folk who sneaked into this country without permission. It’s funny that it is the same people who are sneaking in are the ones whose ancestors were here before any European came to take their land. Fred Trump’s family came to this country from Germany in the late 1800s. Still, they have theirs, so why share with anybody else? The same goes for Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz (whose parents from Cuba came and immediately got government assistance). Then there’s the Boston Bomber brothers from the former Soviet Union whose family is still in the U.S. collecting welfare and getting a free ride in spite of trying to kill us.

Fare share for all

Flushing: Why should anyone pay more to fix the subways’ problems just because they are financially successful? They pay enough taxes now. The mayor should investigate some low-income people because they are that way by choice. They work long enough to go on unemployment. Then they’re eligible for food stamps, Medicaid and other free things. All the while they’re working off the books and know how to hide their assets. Because of this, truly needy people will have to suffer and pay full fare. Our mayor claims there are many jobs around — hence no one should be unemployed.

No more free rides

Brooklyn: With the MTA pressed for funds to fix the transit system, why are so many people ripping off the system and why isn’t anyone doing anything to stop this? At the Third Ave.-149th St. stop in the Bronx, you can get a $1 ride any morning from cheaters who brazenly swipe you in. Why don’t the people in the booth stop this or call the police? It is very obvious. If you need to take the bus in front of McDonald’s around the corner, just enter through the backdoor for free. Not only do bus drivers do nothing to stop this, but they even encourage people to use the backdoor to load more quickly when there is a crowd. The MTA is second only to NYCHA among NYC agencies failing to do their job. Gordon Platt

License to pay

JAMES KEIVOM Brooklyn: In order to raise money to help the MTA improve its service, New York State should go after the residents using out-ofstate plates on their vehicles. Our neighborhoods are saturated by those vehicles, whose owners live here and use our streets and parking spaces. There is a state law related to this issue, so it’s time to enforce it.

Francisco J. Castillo

On-track messaging

Brooklyn: There’s word going around that the MTA is considering a new slogan: “Make America Late Again.” Michael Massa

Dishonorable returns

Manhattan: “Right on!” to U.S. Marine Corps veteran and Voicer James Reilly. America made amnesty for draft dodgers who fled to Canada a priority after the Vietnam War — amnesty without penalty. Couldn’t they at least have been made to work in a rehabilitation center for injured veterans from that war? They in effect received a hero’s welcome home. We all know what kind of welcome those who fought in that war received. Clarence Williams
