Hopefuls eyed in no-rent deals
TWO CITY COUNCIL candidates were hit with accusations of getting a free ride on their campaign office rent, according to complaints filed with the Campaign Finance Board and obtained by the Daily News.
Mel Wymore, a Democrat challenging incumbent Helen Rosenthal on the Upper West Side, is running his campaign from a commercial storefront on Broadway but hasn’t reported paying rent, a complaint filed by Rosenthal’s campaign says .
Marti Speranza, who is running for an open seat in Midtown, is using a pricey penthouse near Madison Square as her campaign HQ without showing any rent expenditures, according to a separate complaint being filed by two supporters of a rival Democratic candidate. Records show the pad is owned by a limited liability company.
Neither candidate has listed the space as an in-kind contribution.
In Speranza’s case, LLCs cannot donate to candidates — and her husband, whose name appears on the condo’s financial docs, has already reached the maximum donation limit.
Both candidates dismissed the complaints. A Speranza spokesman called it “nonsense” and said the camp had followed all campaign rules, but did not explain why there were no rent payments.
A Wymore spokesman said the campaign was using a storefront while a business, Birdbath Cafe, took a break due to finances; because they would return, the landlord couldn’t rent to someone else, therefore the market rent was $0.
