AN 11-YEAR-OLD girl enjoying the surf at Coney Island was rushed to the hospital Saturday after nearly drowning, authorities and witnesses said.

The child fell under the waves near W. 36th St. about 1:30 p.m., an FDNY spokesman said.

Lifeguards and other swimmers managed to grab the child and pull her to safety on the shore.

“The lifeguards were in the water, they were looking for her, and they couldn’t find her,” said William O’Conner, a photographer who assisted in the save. “So I dove in and I swam right into her.

“I tell you the lifeguards, they definitely did their job,” he said. “A bunch of them jumped in the water as soon as they realized someone was drowning.”

Witnesses said lifeguards spent about five minutes looking for the drowning child.

Medics raced the victim to Coney Island Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.

Witnesses said the child was conscious and talking when she was put in an ambulance. Her grandmother was by her side.
