WORD ON BIRD

-

Greg Bird (ankle) had two more hits — including a double —in a minor-league rehab game for Triple-A Scranton on Saturday night. Bird homered twice for the RailRiders on Friday.

“He looked pretty good,” Girardi said after watching tape of the blasts. “It’s hard for me because I can watch the at-bats, but to get the feel of the at-bats and how he’s doing is a little bit more difficult than maybe some people that have their eyes on him a little bit more than I do.”

Asked if Bird could be back Sunday, Girardi replied: “I don’t think so. And people have asked about Detroit, and I’m not even saying then. You have to remember he hasn’t played a lot in two years, but they might say he’s ready, and we might take him, so that’s more of an upstairs call than my call.”

Starlin Castro (hamstring) had a single in three at-bats for TripleA Scranton. Matt Holliday (back) went hitless in two at-bats while also drawing a walk for Class-A Tampa.
