Blaz, O’Neill: Good for cops to tip the Kap
POLICE Commissioner James O’Neill and Mayor de Blasio backed up the NYPD cops who rallied in support of NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
Dozens of cops turned out Saturday to express support for the controversial football player, who took a knee during the national anthem to protest racial injustice last season and now hasn’t been signed for the upcoming season.
“We are all human beings, and we’re entitled to our own opinions. So this is how they feel, and they want to express themselves,” O’Neill told reporters Monday at an unrelated press conference in Brooklyn.
“I have no issue with that whatsoever. In fact, I encourage it.”
De Blasio noted the officers who participated were not on duty.
“They’re citizens, off duty, and have a right to express their opinions,” he said. “And when they go on duty, their political opinions are put aside, and they serve everyone without any bias or political judgment.”
