Rikers gang goons indicted in assaults

- John Annese

FREEDOM MAY be a long way off for 29 current and former Rikers Island inmates indicted for several brutal assaults inside the city jail complex.

The beatdowns targeted inmates and correction officers, and the suspects are members of the Bloods, Trinitarios, MS-13 and Folk Nation gangs, prosecutors said Wednesday.

In one incident, six men attacked an inmate on Oct. 20, cutting him so badly he needed more than 100 stitches on his face, arms and hands, authorities said.

Earlier this year, on Feb. 20, six inmates coated a security camera with peanut butter then put sheets over their heads and smashed a rookie correction officer in the head with a chair, prosecutors said.

Nine of the inmates are already serving time in state prison, 13 more were still in Correction Department custody, and one more is in federal custody.

The remaining six had been released from Rikers. Cops rearrested five of them.
