Coach coy on injury: Odell ‘has an ankle’

- BY JOHN HEALY

IT’S hard to gauge just how long Odell Beckham Jr. will be out with his sprained left ankle, especially with Ben McAdoo providing the details.

Reports late Tuesday suggested Beckham — who sat out Wednesday’s practice and was not seen on the field — could potentially miss the Giants’ season opener against Dallas on Sept. 10, but the tightlipped head coach refused to expand on his star receiver’s status for the second straight day.

“He’s got an ankle and he’s getting treatment and he’s taking it day by day,” McAdoo said.

It’s a phrase McAdoo uttered in some variation five different times in the first 90 seconds of addressing the media on Wednesday.

McAdoo only added he “didn’t learn anything” from Beckham’s MRI on Tuesday and stopped short of ruling Beckham out week-to-week because “a week is a long way away.”

While McAdoo was reserved when it came to Beckham and would not specify if he was in a walking boot, others offered a positive glimpse of what they have seen from their teammate, with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie acknowledging Beckham was walking fine around the facilities.

“You try not to really think about that, Odell and (Brandon) Marshall, who are definitely a big part of our offense,” said Rodgers-Cromartie. “As long as you see the guys walking around the locker room without a problem, you know, you’re happy about that.”

Defensive end Olivier Vernon added he has no worries about Beckham missing Week 1.

“You never want to see a teammate go down, especially in a preseason game,” he said. “I know Odell’s in high spirits right now and we’re going to have him back.”

Marshall also sat out the practice with a shoulder injury but observed from the sidelines.

An NFL.com report on Tuesday suggested Marshall “will be fine,” but it gave no indication of whether or not he will play in Saturday’s preseason game against the Jets, which seems unlikely at this point.

Meanwhile, Beckham’s sprained ankle also raised the question of whether the hit from Browns cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun — whose shoulder went right below Beckham’s knee — was fair.

Damon Harrison and Landon Collins were vocal about the hit, with the Giants safety steaming on the sidelines and ripping Boddy-Calhoun after the game.

“He had about 30 seconds to make a play on the ball in the air,” Collins said. “He could’ve made a play on the ball, could’ve hit him high, but he chose a different route. I can’t respect that.”

Rodgers-Cromartie sounded like he wanted to call it a dirty play, but stopped short of going there Wednesday.

“I mean, it’s football. He definitely could have avoided that,” he said. “It looked like he was going for it on purpose, but I try not to get into that. Nah, I’m not going to get into it. I’ve got attitude like Landon a little bit so I’ll leave that where it’s at.”
