There’s no hitting below ‘The Money Belt’

- BY DAN SHAPIRO WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman holds up the “Money Belt” which goes to winner Saturday.

There may not be a title or championship on the line when Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor square off on Saturday night, but the winner of “The Money Fight” will take home some impressive hardware.

Presented by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman, “The Money Belt” is an impressive collection of jewels: 3,360 diamonds, 600 sapphires, 300 emeralds, 1.5 kg of solid 24 karat gold, and alligator leather. Emblazoned with both Mayweather’s and McGregor’s names, along with the WBC logo, the belt will be awarded to the winner.

“This is an event where two different sports meet in the ring with boxing rules, and I know that Saturday night, boxing is gonna be in the eyes of millions and millions of people around the world,” Sulaiman said at the final press conference before the fight. “In order to celebrate this great event between the WBC champion, the WBC hero … (and) the UFC hero Conor McGregor, the WBC has created REUTERS ‘The Money Belt’.”

Unlike traditional boxing straps, “The Money Belt,” is asymmetrical, with the circular medallion offset to preserve the integrity of the reptile skin. It’s a fitting prize for both Mayweather and McGregor, who flaunt their wealth and penchant for extravagant jewelry. Sulaiman and the WBC often create custom belts for major boxing events; Mayweather has taken home the majority of the luxury hardware.

Earning the WBC diamond belt in 2012 with a unanimous decision over Miguel Cotto, Mayweather would go on to claim the emerald belt in 2015, when he bested Manny Pacquiao in the highest grossing boxing fight to date. With Saturday’s bout expected to surpass the Mayweather-Pacquiao gate and revenue marks, Sulaiman commissioned “The Money Belt” as the ultimate prize in boxing.
