Leaders, moms talk about guns

- Esha Ray

A GUN violence summit Thursday at a Brooklyn hospital brought together cops, community leaders and activists looking for a solution.

The discussion at Kings County Hospital, hosted by the 67th Precinct Clergy Council, known as the GodSquad, included several voices from the neighborhoods surrounding the East Flatbush hospital and from the nonprofit Everytown for Gun Safety.

Advocates, faith leaders and mental health specialists spoke about several issues, including dealing with trauma, how to steer youth away from guns, reducing neighborhood and gang tensions and keeping guns off the street.

Several mothers whose children died from gun violence were also at conference.

Monica Cassaberry, 51, lost her son, Jamal Singleton, 22, six years ago.

“I’m here because I’m supporting other mothers who have been through what we’ve been through and trying to stop and prevent another mother from going through what we’re going through,” Cassaberry told the crowd.

NYPD Inspector Joseph Gulotta, the commanding officer of the 67th Precinct, touted historic lows in crime across the city, but said there’s always more work to be done.

“At the end of the day we should have zero shootings,” Gulotta said. “The baseline should be zero.”
