Mnuchin, wife eyed eclipse on Ky. jaunt

- BY RICH SCHAPIRO

TREASURY secretary Steven Mnuchin and his wife are catching more shade for their taxpayer-funded trip to Kentucky after it was revealed they caught the eclipse while they were there.

Mnuchin’s actress wife Louise Linton already came under fire for the jaunt after a tone-deaf Instagram post boasting about her designer accessories on the government plane and her Marie Antoinette-like attack on an online critic she chided as “adorably out of touch.”

But the couple is facing new questions about their trip after it was revealed that Mnuchin spent part of his time there viewing the solar eclipse.

The revelation came after a top watchdog group filed a formal request asking if the trip was timed to get the couple closer to the path of totality for the rare event.

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington said in a freedom of information request that the trip “seems to have been planned around the solar eclipse,” the Washington Post reported.

Thousands had flocked to Kentucky for the event.

Fittingly, the millionaire Mnuchin viewed it at a gilded location — Fort Knox, which holds nearly $2 billion in gold.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) revealed the outing in a Facebook photo showing him standing alongside Mnuchin at Fort Knox “before we viewed the #solareclipse .”

The Treasury Department pushed back at assertions the eclipse was the real reason for the trip. “They watched it briefly from outside before they entered (prior to the actual time of full eclipse),” the agency said in a statement to the Post.

Treasury officials described the trip as “official government travel” and dismissed the suggestion that it was planned specifically to coincide with the celestial event.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) cited the eclipse in a letter sent to the Treasury’s general counsel Thursday seeking a “detailed explanation” of the travel and justification for use of the government plane.

Jets like the one the couple took to Kentucky have a reimbursable rate of up to $10,000 an hour, the paper reported.

A Treasury rep told The Post Mnuchin is reimbursing the government for Linton’s travel, but declined to say who approved the use of the plane.

Linton apologized for her condescending comments on Tuesday and changed her Instagram account to private.
