REYES IN THE OUTFIELD

Wright on! Captain plays 5 innings at 3rd for St. Lucie

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

David Wright continued his attempted comeback Friday night, playing his first game in the field for Class-A St. Lucie. In five innings at third base, Wright caught a pop up, had one clean ground ball and made a fielding error on another grounder to third. He got his first hit, a single, and finished 1-for-3 with two strikeouts.

Wright has not played in a major league game since May 27, 2016. He was sidelined with a herniated disc in his neck, which required surgery. The 34-year-old Mets captain has played in just 75 regular-season games since 2015. He was initially diagnosed with spinal stenosis in early 2015. He missed 115 games learning to deal with a degenerative spine issue before coming back late in the season for the Mets’ playoff run to the World Series.

Jose Reyes went out Friday and tested his rib cage one last time. The Mets infielder is set to come off the disabled list on Saturday and in the wake of yet another devastating injury, the veteran infielder will be asked to take on another role. With the loss of Michael Conforto with a dislocated shoulder Thursday, Reyes will be asked to be an emergency outfielder.

So Reyes will be out taking balls in the outfield during batting practice just in case.

“Yeah, I think it’s important that he does, just to protect us,” Mets manager Terry Collins said. “Again, we’re trying to maximize the versatility of all our players. In case things happen

in a game, and I have to move guys around, we’ll make sure Jose takes some fly balls.”

Reyes took fly balls in the outfield this spring and played one inning in center field this season. The 34-year-old shortstop has played third base, short and second base this year.

“I am good to do whatever they want me to do,” Reyes said Friday.

SETH STEPS FORWARD

Right-hander Seth Lugo came through his bullpen session fine Friday afternoon. The right-hander, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 15 with a right shoulder impingement, will likely make one of the starts in Sunday’s split doubleheader.

Lugo is pitching with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament, trying to avoid Tommy John surgery. He is 5-3 with a 4.85 ERA in 11 starts this season.

FAMILIA AT HOME

Closer Jeurys Familia was activated off the disabled list Friday but did not appear in the win over the Nationals.

Familia, who has been out since mid-May after surgery to remove a blood clot in his shoulder, said he was not at all anxious about returning.

“I am ready, I feel good and I know what it feels like to be out there,” Familia said.

HARVEY RE-ROUTED

Because of expected bad weather in Florida, a side effect of Hurricane Harvey in the Gulf Coast, the Mets have scuttled their plans to have Matt Harvey make his final rehab start there with the Class-A St. Lucie Mets. Instead, Harvey will start for Double-A Binghamton at Portland Saturday. He is expected to be activated off the disabled list Sept. 1.
