Edelman may have torn ACL

-

Julian Edelman limped off the field with an injured right knee, putting a damper on a strong performance from Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. And according to a report, the injury could put a damper on the Pats’ entire season.

Edelman was hurt on the opening possession that ended with Brady throwing his first of two touchdown passes to Chris Hogan in a 30-28 victory over the Detroit Lions on Friday night. According to multiple reports, the Patriots suspect Edelman may have a torn ACL.

“We’ve got great chemistry together, and he’s an incredible player,” Brady said. “But someone will have to step up.”

Edelman had three receptions for 52 yards in a four-play stretch and was injured on the last one as he was tackled by safety Tavon Wilson, a former teammate. He was evaluated on the sideline briefly before being taken to the locker room on a cart and being ruled out for the game.

Brady was 12 of 15 for 174 yards with two TDs and an interception.

Two swings cost Dustin Johnson the lead, and it wasn’t long before Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler caught up to him in The Northern Trust.

Spieth ran off five straight birdies on the back nine at Glen Oaks Club for a 5-under 65, which allowed him to join a four-way tie for the lead with Johnson, Fowler and Jhonattan Vegas going into the weekend.

Johnson hit consecutive tee shots that wound up on the wrong hole and led to back-to-back bogeys in his round of 69. Fowler made up a five-shot deficit in the final six holes with three birdies for a 66.

Spieth played in the afternoon and surged into a share of the lead by matching the longest birdie streak of his PGA Tour career.

His six birdies on the back nine included putts of 25 feet and 40 feet. Vegas played bogey-free for a 65. The leaders were at 6-under 134.

Second-half substitute Gonzalo Veron scored in the 70th minute on his first career penalty kick and the New York Red Bulls tied New York City FC 1-1 in the Hudson River Derby.

New York (12-10-3) won the first four regular-season games against NYC (14-75), but the Red Bulls have lost three of the last five, including two this season.

Maximiliano Moralez opened the scoring in the 56th minute for NYC. He got behind the defense to settle David Villa’s pass with his right foot and finish with his left.

The goal came two minutes after Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips appeared to be fouled from behind on an open header inside the 6-yard box. Veron’s penalty kick followed NYC’s soft contact with Sacha Kljestan just inside the 18-yard box.

Maria Sharapova’s first Grand Slam match in more than 1.5 years will come against No. 2-seeded Simona Halep at the U.S. Open.

Sharapova’s first-round matchup with two-time French Open runner-up Halep was set up by Friday’s draw, which also put Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on the same side of the men’s bracket.

The U.S. Tennis Association awarded a wild-card invitation to Sharapova, who is ranked only 147th after returning from a 15-month doping suspension in April.

Sharapova was kicked off the tour after testing positive for the newly banned drug meldonium at the 2016 Australian Open.

Tina Charles and Epiphanny Prince each scored 20 points and the host Liberty used a stellar defensive effort in the fourth quarter to beat the Washington Mystics 74-66. The Liberty have won seven straight and moved 1 1/2 games in front of Washington for the fourth seed in the playoffs.

The New Jersey Devils have signed veteran winger Drew Stafford to a one-year deal worth $800,000.

Stafford, 31, had eight goals and 13 assists last season with Winnipeg and Boston. The Jets traded him to the Bruins at the deadline and had two goals in six playoff games.
