JUST A FIGHT OF FANCY!
Boxers make weight, so now we wait
LAS VEGAS — Moments after the final staredown before his super fight against Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor seized one last opportunity to take a dig at his foe.
Weighing in at 153 pounds to Mayweather’s 149.5, McGregor questioned the undefeated champion’s physique and conditioning, while touting his own appearance.
“He looks like dogs---, you know that. He looks blown out, full of water. He’s not gonna keep my pace trust me on that. That’s the worst shape I’ve ever seen him,” said McGregor. “Look at me. I’m in peak physical condition. I put in the work as everyone can tell.”
With unfounded rumors surfacing on fight week that McGregor was in danger of missing weight, the Irishman, who has never missed weight and spent the majority of his career fighting at 145 pounds, had no trouble making the 154-pound limit.
On fight night, however, he expects to be significantly bigger.
“I’m a professional, I make weight. It’s sacrifice. It’s dedication, it’s focus, but I make it and that’s it,” stated McGregor. And when questioned by Showtime’s Jim Gray about his actual competition weight, the “Notorious” replied “a lot bigger than him. I’d say close to 170 (pounds).”
The T-Mobile Arena crowd was heavily in McGregor’s favor, as Irish colors — green, white and orange — dominated the stands.
Mayweather seemed completely unfazed by his lack of fan support, citing his 49-0 record and two decades of experience.
“I’ve been here before. I know what it takes when it’s a fight of this magnitude,” explained Mayweather. “It comes down to the two competitors. The fans cannot fight for you. Forty-nine times I went out there, it was one-on-one.”
When asked about the significant size difference, Mayweather, who continues to affirm that the fight will end in a knockout in his favor, responded “weight doesn’t win fights. Fighting wins fights. It won’t go the distance, mark my word.”
Now that the day of the fight has arrived, both Mayweather and McGregor will re-hydrate and replenish before they step into the ring. And once he arrives on Saturday night, McGregor makes no secret of his game plan.
“I’ll stomp my foot right in the center of that ring. I won’t go nowhere other than the center of that ring, so let’s go,” added McGregor. “Let’s see who can take it. He’s over there twiddling his thumbs, twitching away. I see a man afraid, that’s it. Let’s see tomorrow.”
