Step right up, folks, & eat your insects
IF THERE’S A fly in your soup, it’s meant to be there.
The first-ever Brooklyn Bugs festival arrives this weekend, and it’s all about entomophagy — that’s right, eating insects.
From Friday to Sunday, guests will be able to chow down on ants, roaches, crickets and more in an event billed as a “celebration of edible insects” that hopes to explore the “gastronomical, sustainable and ecologically friendly aspects of entomophagy,” according to the festival website, brooklynbugs.com.
There will be panels, presentations, cooking demos and even a “Bug Banquet” featuring chefs like festival organizer Joseph Yoon; David George Gordon, best known as the “Bug Chef”; and Chef PV, who runs a popular YouTube channel called “Buggin’Out.”
Many see entomophagy as a way to fight world hunger. The United Nations recommends eating insects as a sustainable source of protein as competition for other food resources grows.
Crickets are some of the most popular edible bugs these days. You can find them ground up into tortilla chips, protein bars, and even Bolognese sauce made with crickets and mealworms.
Brooklyn Bugs events welcome kids and will be held in Williamsburg and Greenpoint at locations including T.B.D. Brooklyn, Kinfolk 94, the Brooklyn Kitchen and Guadalupe Inn.
