PEDs cost Owa four games

-

THE NFL on Monday suspended Giants defensive end Owa Odighizuwa the first four games of the 2017 regular season without pay for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancing substances. The suspension continues an unusual and unfortunate offseason for Odighizuwa, 25, a third-round Giants 2014 draft pick out of UCLA.

In April, the defensive end tweeted, “I believe it’s in my best interest to take some time to get away from the game.” But then he reported to the Giants anyway, and since the Giants’ public relations department has not allowed Odighizuwa to speak to the media.

Odighizuwa would be eligible to return to the Giants’ active roster on Oct. 2, following Week 4, if he were still on the team at that point. He is eligible to participate in all remaining preseason practices and games, but he already had fallen far down the depth chart entering a make-or-break season.

The Giants had no comment and neither did Odighizuwa’s agents.

OFFENSIVE LINE DEPTH TAKES HIT

The Giants have placed guard Adam Gettis on injured reserve with a foot injury. Gettis was one of the Giants’ top interior backups if not their best prior to getting hurt. With the Giants painfully thin at corner, they filled the roster vacancy with a second cornerback acquired in two days, rookie free agent Daniel Gray, released recently by the Arizona Cardinals. The Giants on Sunday claimed corner Tay Glover-Wright off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles after waiving injured defensive end Evan Schwan (fractured foot).

MORE INJURY NOTES

Dwayne Harris returned to practice after missing last week with an upper-body injury, but several other injured Giants missed practice: receiver Tavarres King (right ankle), defensive tackle Jay Bromley (knee), cornerbacks Eli Apple (ankle) and Michael Hunter (concussion), safety Duke Ihenacho (knee), linebackers Keenan Robinson (concussion) and Mark Herzlich (burner). Healthy defensive tackle Damon Harrison also took a rest day.
