Displaced won’t face deportation
UNDOCUMENTED immigrants facing the devastation of Harvey will not have to face punishment from the federal government as well.
Agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Patrol will not conduct “routine noncriminal immigration enforcement” at shelters assisting those recovering from the storm, the agencies said in a statement.
Authorities may make a “case-by-case” decision in incidences where a “serious criminal” is getting relief and they are alerted by local law enforcement, disaster managers at the Federal Emergency Management Agency said.
However, the city of Houston announced in English and Spanish that it will not ask for immigration status or paperwork at any shelter.
