Cop kills dog – wild shot strikes fed
AN NYPD detective hunting for a robbery suspect in Jersey City shot and killed a pit bull that attacked a federal agent early Thursday — and accidentally shot a U.S. marshal in the foot in the process, police said.
Detective Christian Martinez, a member of the Manhattan warrants squad, was searching with the U.S. Marshals Service’s New York/New Jersey Fugitive Task Force for a 25-year-old robbery suspect in Jersey City’s Greenville section. At about 6:40 a.m., their investigation led them to Bayview Ave.
When task force members opened the door to the home, the dog charged, biting one of the officers.
Martinez, a 10-year NYPD veteran, fired five rounds at the dog, striking and killing the animal.
A U.S. marshal was hit in the foot and taken to Jersey City Medical Center with a minor injury.
The Hudson County prosecutor’s office, which is investigating the matter, described the dead animal as a “large pit bull.”
Suspect Javan Reaves, who had skipped out on bail after being arrested for burglary in May 2016, and had several open warrants against him, was found inside the home and taken into custody.
