Chinatown road opens — a little
CHINATOWN ACTIVISTS who have fought to open the Park Row corridor that’s been closed since 9/11 won a small opening in the blockade.
The city and NYPD on Thursday announced that a half-mile stretch of Park Row, linking Chinatown with lower Manhattan, will get a two-way protected bike lane and 10,000 square feet of new pedestrian space.
Community advocates have complained that the blocked path chokes off Chinatown from foot traffic.
“This is a wall that shuts us off,” said Virginia Kee of the ChineseAmerican Planning Council.
Councilwoman Margaret Chin said the Park Row issue is frequently raised at community meetings.
“The one topic they always ask — when are we gonna open Park Row,” she said.
Terrorism concerns are keeping Park Row from opening completely. It runs near 1 Police Plaza and federal buildings.
“It’s been a balancing act,” said city Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg. “We’re committed to opening up public spaces wherever we can.”
