OBJ will strike it rich
game-winning field goal at the buzzer in the Giants’ 40-38 win, presumably to win the kicking job over veteran Mike Nugent. Rosas, 22, an undrafted rookie out of Southern Oregon, was still full of adrenaline coming off the field after his big kick, walking with a determined gait to the locker room. Punter Brad Wing joked, “What a hold.” But Rosas appeared to separate himself in a tight competition.
“Walking out there I was, ‘OK, this is gonna be 1-for-1,’ I don’t remember anything I’ve done in the past,” Rosas said. “I wasn’t thinking after the kick or anything. I was in the moment as much as I can be, and it felt good.”
A LOOK AT THE FUTURE
Rookie QB Davis Webb, the third-round pick, engineered the game-winning drive by completing 4-of-6 passes for 45 yards in 44 seconds. Ben McAdoo said it was “good to see the young quarterback go out and move the team down the field” at the end.
Webb leaned heavily on tight end Matt LaCosse for 10- and 11-yard completions at the end. LaCosse broke out with five catches for 60 yards and two TDs, pushing from the fringe of the tight end battle into the thick of it.
“He’s a mismatch,” Webb said of LaCosse, an undrafted Illinois product. “He’s bigger, faster (than a lot of tight ends). He’s agile. He’s a great route runner, blocks well and works hard.”
LaCosse is battling tight ends Will Tye and Jerell Adams for one roster spot. Tye caught four passes for 48 yards but fumbled his first reception. Adams caught one for five yards.
FULL BACKS
McAdoo kept lamenting last year that he didn’t have a fullback. Well, he has one now. Shane Smith, an undrafted free agent signing out of San Jose State, should make this team after big blocks on a Shaun Draughn 1-yard TD run and an Orleans Darkwa 21-yard rip. Smith is hardnosed and physical and athletic, all the traits that McAdoo values at any position, especially the man opening holes in the run game. Draughn, the journeyman vet, bulldozed and deked his way to 54 yards on 14 carries plus the TD.
