Hey, Russians, what’s cookin’?

- Christopher Brennan

WHERE THERE’S smoke, there’s some kind of fire.

Observers spotted black plumes rising from Russia’s consulate in San Francisco as the country prepares for U.S. investigators to search it when its diplomats leave.

President Trump and the State Department ordered Moscow to shutter its West Coast facility by Saturday, the latest escalation in a back-and-forth between the U.S. and Russia.

Firefighters were called to a report of the blaze Friday at the building but were not allowed to enter. Staff was intentionally burning items in a fireplace on the 90-plus degree day, a department spokeswoman said.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the smoke came as “measures for the conservation of the building are being carried out.”
