President Trump and the State Department ordered Moscow to shutter its West Coast facility by Saturday, the latest escalation in a back-and-forth between the U.S. and Russia.
Firefighters were called to a report of the blaze Friday at the building but were not allowed to enter. Staff was intentionally burning items in a fireplace on the 90-plus degree day, a department spokeswoman said.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the smoke came as “measures for the conservation of the building are being carried out.”
