A DISTURBED MAN had to be fished out of the Hudson River Saturday after he jumped off a pier in Battery Park, authorities said.

Shan Wen Lin, 70, leaped into the water around 4:15 p.m., according to U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Somma.

Lin waved at the stunned crowd on the shore and then swam away from the pier in the choppy river, said witness Erin Blaskie, 34, of Ottawa, Canada.

Crew members from a nearby ship threw a life preserver but Lin refused to grab it, Somma said.

Parks police officer Philip Weber (photo inset) dove into the water and grabbed the struggling man.

“He was mostly flailing, kicking,” Weber explained. “He was yelling at me. He appeared to be not in his right state of mind. I just kind of held onto him a little more.”

Eventually Lin stopped fighting, Weber grabbed the life preserver and the two men were pulled back to the pier.

Witnesses said Lin looked deranged when he was brought out of the water.

“He looked a little crazy,” said Michael Grillo, 20, of Astoria.”I don't know if he had like a mental breakdown or something.”

Lin only spoke in Mandarin, which was translated to the cops by a woman in the crowd, Somma said.

"She said he kept saying somebody was after him," he said.
