YANKS GAME DAY

GAME 135: Sept. 2, 2017 Where: Yankee Stadium

-

RED SOX (77-59) Yankees (72-63)

Now this is the kind of offense performance the Yankees were looking for over the Holliday weekend.

Matt Holliday, in his first game since coming off the disabled list, belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning that propelled the Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Red Sox on Saturday at The Stadium. It was the 37-year-old DH’s first homer since July 15 at Fenway Park. Holliday, who signed one-year, $13 million deal in the offseason, posted a .915 OPS in his first 65 games before struggling and being sidelined due to a viral infection and back injury. In his previous 23 games, he’d posted a .329 OPS.

The Bombers are 10-8 against the Bosox in 2017 and 4.5 games behind them in the AL East. The two teams will wrap up their season series with a dandy as Luis Severino and Chris Sale will square off on Sunday night.

Masahiro Tanaka went seven strong innings, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out three and walked two.

The Yankees took a 1-0 on Chase Headley’s 10th homer in the second, but the Red Sox tied the game in the sixth when Tanaka uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Eduardo Nunez to score from third.

Holliday then countered with a 443-foot bomb off Red Sox lefty Drew Pomerantz to left. Gary Sanchez added an RBI single in the seventh.
