All I’m asking is shot at a future

- LUCIA MIGUEL

My parents migrated to the United States from Mexico City in search of more job opportunities and a better future for my brother and me. We have been in the United States for 16 years, and I was 6 years old when I first got here.

Since then, I’ve lived in Brooklyn and attended first grade up to high school. My career goal is to become an elementary school teacher.

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — or DACA — program first came out when I was in ninth grade; I was around 16 when I realized the opportunity that DACA had for my life.

With DACA, I’ve had the opportunity to go to college at Kingsborough Community College.

It also allows us to have a better job, which is helpful because I can pay for my semester by not working off the books. DACA makes me think and feel like I can work for better things in life.

My parents have always believed in the American Dream: better jobs, better future and better things in life. They always tell me to fight for the things I really want in life.

I’m really hoping President Trump doesn’t end DACA, because this will affect my goals and opportunities in life.

DACA is my only way right now to become a better person in life and look beyond my goals.

With DACA, I am free to travel around the United States and pursue the goals that I set for my life.

I have plans to buy my own house and take care of my parents, but the only way to do this is with DACA. Without it, I just can’t move forward to better things, which is sad because I’m still young.

I’m hoping President Trump thinks about us. We are here not because we wanted it, but because our parents wanted us to have a better future.

If he ends DACA, this means that I have to find other ways to have a better future, which means to work more hours for less pay. This is scary for me, but this is life without DACA. My brother and I grew up in the United States, and we weren’t born here but it feels like we were.

If he ends DACA, it means that we have to start from zero again. President Trump has to give us a chance to show him that we could do better in the United States with DACA.

We can show him the thing that he can’t see for us, which is a better future.
