Push to bar crook pols from reruns

- Jillian Jorgensen

IF CITY Councilman Ritchie Torres has his way, Hiram Monserrate might be the last disgraced pol convicted of corruption to seek a City Council comeback.

Torres is drafting legislation that would bar any with a “conviction relating to public corruption” from holding a Council seat.

“The very candidacy of Hiram Monserrate is a tragedy for good government,” Torres (D-Bronx) told the Daily News. “I have a simple message for the likes of Hiram Monseratte: If you’ve been convicted of public corruption, you have no business running for, much less serving in the City Council.”

The bill wouldn’t apply to Monserrate, who is running in next Tuesday’s Democratic primary to fill the seat being vacated by Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland in Corona, Queens. But it’s clearly inspired by the candidate — who pleaded guilty to fraud for stealing more than $100,000 in public funds during his last stint as a City Council member.
